  • A circular polarizer is a camera lens filter that reduces reflection and glare.
  • It also makes colors appear more vibrant in outdoor photos.
  • When placed in front of the camera lens, a polarising filter has the power to transform a flat, lifeless image into one with deep vibrancy and contrast.
  • It works by darkening bright blue skies, increasing the saturation of foliage such as green icelandic moss, and even allows you to manage reflections or reduce glare from the surface of water.
  • It reduces the amount of reflected light that goes through your lens and into your camera’s image sensor, cutting out the haze while allowing your camera to capture a clearer scene.
  • Circular polarizers, also called cpl filters, are a staple in all photographer’s camera bags.
  • Landscape photographers in particular often use circular polarizer filters.
  • They can also be useful for taking pictures of cars, street scenes, and objects in sunny conditions.
  • There are two main types of polarising filters on the market – those which are warming and those that are neutral in tone.
  • A warming polariser is excellent for shooting hazy scenes.
  • It adds a subtle yellowish or reddish tone, which cuts through the haze to create clearer photos with a more natural appearance.
  • A neutral polariser will produce a slightly cooler tone.
  • These kinds of polarisers allow you to maintain colour fidelity whilst highlighting the natural tones and colours of the scene.
  • When purchasing one, you can either choose one that is linear or one that is circular.
  • Linear polarising filters are designed to be used with manual focus film cameras.
  • They can throw off your autofocus system and even cause metering issues.
  • Circular polarisers have been developed for use with autofocus lenses and complex electronics.
  • When purchasing one, make sure that it says “circular polarising filter” on it, otherwise you might end up with one that is linear.
  • The filter has two pieces of glass sandwiched together.
  • The linear polarizer glass blocks light waves from certain directions to reduce glare and reflections.
  • The quarter-wave plate comes after the linear polarizer.
  • It changes linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light.
  • This is useful for modern dslr and mirrorless cameras where the autofocus systems require the polarized light to be circular.

how to use a cpl lens filter 1

Using it on the lens

  1. Remove any lens caps and hoods.
  2. Carefully unscrew the filter from your lens, making sure not to force it.
  3. Keep your filter in a protective case to prevent scratches and damage when not in use.
  4. If you have a filter that screws onto your camera lens, just screw it onto the front of the lens.
  5. Make sure to properly align the filter before attempting to thread it on to prevent damaging the lens’ filter thread.
  6. Forcing the filter can strip the thread, so take care when attaching it.
  7. The filter should screw on smoothly.
  8. Ensure that it is securely attached.
  9. Circular polarizers are also available in square format systems.
  10. In this case, the filter holder will screw into the front of your lens, and the filter will slide into the holder.
  11. While looking through the camera viewfinder or the lcd screen, rotate the outer ring of the circular polarizer.
  12. You will see the changes in the reflections or sky as you rotate the filter.
  13. You can dial the filter to the position that provides you with the saturation intensity you prefer.
  14. Sometimes, the blue sky may become too dark and over saturated looking, which may not be to your liking.
  15. The effect varies depending on the angle of the sun relative to your shooting direction.
  16. Usually most effective when the sun is at a 90-degree angle to your lens.
  17. If you have multiple lenses with different filter sizes, just purchase a circular polarising filter that fits the lens with the largest thread.
  18. Then you’ll be able to use a step-down ring so that the filter fits the thread of your other lenses.
  19. If you are affixing the polariser to a filter holder, then you won’t have this issue as you will be able to use it across all of your lenses, provided that you have adapters to fit the filter holder onto lenses with different threads.
  20. You can get “step-up” rings which fit into your lens filter-thread and take a bigger filter.
  21. For example, a 62mm thread would take a step-up to a 72mm filter which avoids cut-off.
  22. A filter that projects in front of the lens a bit can cut off some of the light that is supposed to reach the very corners.
  23. This is a common issue with filters on wide angle lenses.
  24. Having said that, you might actually like the effect it creates, so it’s all a matter of personal opinion.

Scenes, angle, and situations

  • CPL filters work best when there is a lot of light.
  • They are incredibly versatile and can help you take better photos in various situations.
  • The most common case of using a circular polarizer is for removing reflections.
  • When photographing through windows, glass or other reflective surfaces, a cpl filter can help to eliminate them and capture what’s behind the glass with clarity.
  • Photographers also find a circular polarizing lens filter handy if they take photos through a window, or of glass buildings, as distracting light streaks and glare that infiltrate a shot can be eliminated.
  • Photos of painted surfaces, such as vehicles or buildings, also create shine and reflections and can benefit from the use of a cpl filter.
  • If you take photos of water or wet surfaces, the filter reduces scattered light and cuts out reflections of the sky or other objects on the water’s surface.
  • This allows the detail of the water, including the surface below it, to stand out.
  • When you want to shoot a landscape with a sea, river or lake where you can see through the water, a circular polarizing filter is something that you need.
  • By reducing reflections on the water’s surface, the filter will reveal the submerged textures and details.
  • This can make a photo more interesting and deep.
  • A cpl filter will also remove reflections from wet stones and rocks allowing to capture their true colour without highlighted spots.
  • For photos of foliage or forests, the cpl filter can add saturation, vividness and contrast.
  • It can transform nature into a richer and more verdant shade of colors.
  • The filter can really come into its own during autumn, when nature’s hues are at their finest.
  • A cpl filter can also banish reflections and shine from leaves, trees or plants, creating clear scenes free from distractions.
  • Since cpl filters block out certain wavelengths of light you can manipulate the colour effect of your photos to add more contrast.
  • If you take photos of the sky, for instance, the filter can add a deeper tone to the blue, or make dull clouds appear more visually striking.
  • You can also use a circular polarizing lens filter to create darker, richer or more intense tones.
  • This is especially relevant if you want to add drama, atmosphere or even a sense of tension to an image.
  • Experiment by rotating the filter to create the desired effect, balancing a natural feel with a surrealist look.
  • To achieve the maximum linear polarization effect, shoot at an angle of 90 degrees from the sun or source of light.
  • One of the first things people notice when starting out in photography is how difficult it can be to take photos through a window.
  • A polarized filter grants you the benefits of the polarization effect, which has the ability to reduce all those unwanted light streaks that blur the subject of your shot.
  • It can also do the same for light reflected on water surfaces.
  • One of the most common uses of a circular polarizing lens filter is to reduce reflections from non-metallic surfaces.
  • Any outdoors photographer will be only too familiar with the irritation of reflections, particularly when it’s very bright or sunny.
  • These reflections can easily distract from a photo’s subject.
  • Sticking a cpl filter on your camera lens helps to kick bothersome reflections into touch.
  • Nothing helps give your landscape shot a more foreboding sense of tension than a darker, more menacing-looking sky.
  • The same could be said of shots inside where you’re aiming to create a sinister atmosphere.
  • A good cpl filter will enable you to do just this without making the scenario look unnatural.
  • This example blurs the line between when and when not to use a polarized filter, as you could justifiably want to increase or decrease the amount of colour depending on what you’re trying to achieve.
  • In this case, if you’re trying to boost colour in a blue sky then the cpl would come in handy.
  • A circular polarizer can improve your outdoor photos by reducing glare and reflections.
  • It also enhances colors and contrast.
  • Learning how to use a circular polarizer can enhance your photos.
  • It helps to reveal more details and colors that reflections and glare might obscure.
  • Use a polarizer to reduce glare from the car’s metallic surfaces or windows.
  • This will allow you to see inside the car more clearly.
  • A circular polarizing filter works best with reflected light.
  • If there is no reflected light, you will not get any polarized effect.
  • You should not use a circular polarizer at night or in extremely shady areas.
  • Using the circular polarizer in well-lit areas is best for optimal results.
  • Cpl filters also tend to work best during daylight, particularly on bright days.
  • So you’re unlikely to benefit from this filter if you take photos at night.
  • When shooting at night you’ll likely want to reflect as much light as possible as there will be very little illuminating your subject in the first place.
  • Any filter that blocks out light in this case would do more damage than good.
  • A cpl filter will only serve to reduce light to your lens when shooting at night, which is the last thing you’ll want as you’re likely using a slow shutter speed given it’s already pitch black.
  • Leave your cpl filter off your lens in this scenario.
  • Similarly, it’s not worth using a circular polarizing filter in very low light or completely shady areas, as glare or reflections won’t be an issue.
  • Another scenario dictating when not to use a circular polarizing filter is if you shoot rainbows.
  • A rainbow is actually just reflected light, so if you stick a polarizer on your lens, the rainbow will vanish.
  • Simply take your cpl filter off, and it will reappear.
  • Reflected light can sometimes enhance a photo, especially if the light itself takes on a color other than the usual.
  • For instance, if the sky is red in the evening, this can create a vibrant effect that would be best off kept.
  • We tend to think of reflected light as negative in photography, attempting to eliminate it as much as possible with a circular polarizing filter.
  • But there are some instances where reflected light can actually add drama and visual appeal to a photo, such as a brightly colored sunset, in which case it would be best not to use a cpl filter.
  • If the reflected color takes on a different or unusual hue, this can make an image interesting and unique.
  • Polarized light isn’t always necessarily a bad thing.
  • Water is transparent and, as such, not always easy to capture through a lens.
  • It can be difficult to tell the difference between a wet rock and a dry one, but allowing light to shine off the droplets can overcome this issue.
  • If you want to highlight water on an image, this isn’t always easy to achieve through photography, as water is transparent.
  • You can’t always tell the difference between a wet or a dry rock in a photo but by removing your cpl filter, you can capture light shining off droplets of water creating a wet, shimmery look.
  • Sometimes you might want to introduce reflections or shadows to give a sense of depth to an object.
  • Taking a photo of a colored ball might make it look like a flat disk.
  • Adding a slight reflection off the curved surface gives it a realistic, three-dimensional effect.
  • In this case, don’t use a circular polarizing filter.
  • You’ll need to take two shots, one with a polarizer and the other without.
  • With the help of some post-production trickery, you can blend the two exposures, taking the best bits from each photo.
  • You can also experiment with blending multiple long exposures to see some fantastic results.
  • When using a polarizer on your camera lens, you may need to adjust your settings to compensate for the reduced light.
  • This could mean using a longer shutter speed or a higher ISO to achieve the correct exposure.
  • Landscape photographers need to pay particular attention when using a polarizing filter.
  • When using a filter with an ultra-wide-angle lens, be careful of uneven polarization.
  • This can make the sky appear unnatural.
  • Wide angle lenses will cause the sky to be uneven in brightness.
  • This is because cpl filters work best when they’re at a 90-degree angle away from a light source, such as the sun, and a wide-angle lens usually covers more than 90 degrees.
  • This results in an uneven polarizing effect in your photo.
  • By rotating a circular polarizing filter, you can block out certain wavelengths of light.
  • This lets you reduce glare, haze and reflections from objects such as water, glass or vehicles.
  • It’s also great for darkening the sky to add a bit of drama to your shots.
  • Although circular polarizing filters have many great uses, there are some occasions when they do more harm than good.
  • In such cases, they should be left off your lens.
