How To Get The Metal Detector?
How to get the Metal Detector in Terraria

The Metal Detector in Terraria is dropped by the Nymph, a rare enemy found underground. You don’t craft it, buy it, or find it in a chest.
To get it, you need to:
- Go to the Cavern layer
- Look for a rare NPC-looking enemy called the Lost Girl
- Approach or attack her so she transforms into a Nymph
- Defeat the Nymph
- Hope she drops the Metal Detector
The drop chance is usually 50% in Classic Mode and 100% in Expert/Master Mode, depending on your version.
Where to find the Nymph

The Nymph spawns in the Cavern layer, not usually near the surface. You’ll know you’re deep enough when the background changes to darker stone caves and you start seeing tougher underground enemies.
She first appears as a harmless-looking NPC called Lost Girl. This is the part that catches a lot of players off guard. She looks like someone you might rescue, but once you get close, she changes into the Nymph and attacks.
Good places to search:
- Long horizontal tunnels in the Cavern layer
- Large open cave areas
- Underground cabins and nearby caves
- Areas where enemies can spawn off-screen and walk toward you
Try not to search in tiny cramped tunnels. The Nymph is rare, and giving enemies more room to spawn makes the hunt much less painful.
Best way to farm the Metal Detector

If you just wander randomly, finding a Nymph can take a while. A simple farming setup makes it easier.
Dig or find a large open area in the Cavern layer, then clear out space around you. Place platforms or blocks so you can move safely, and add a small safe box or shelter if enemies are giving you trouble.
Useful items for farming:
- Hunter Potion — highlights enemies, making the Lost Girl/Nymph easier to spot
- Battle Potion — increases enemy spawn rates
- Water Candle — also increases enemy spawn rates
- Lifeform Analyzer — detects rare creatures nearby, including the Nymph/Lost Girl
The Lifeform Analyzer is especially helpful because it can show “Lost Girl” when she is nearby. You can buy it from the Traveling Merchant when he happens to sell it.
If you have a Hunter Potion active, the Lost Girl will be highlighted like an enemy, even before she transforms. That makes her much easier to notice in dark caves.
Be careful when fighting her

The Nymph hits harder than many new players expect. If you’re still early in the game, don’t stand next to her trading hits.
Use weapons that let you attack from a distance:
- Bows
- Magic weapons
- Yo-yos
- Guns
- Summons
- Boomerangs
A shield, decent armor, and mobility accessories help a lot. If you’re farming before Hardmode, even basic arena preparation can save you from annoying deaths.
Why the Metal Detector matters
The Metal Detector shows nearby valuable ores, chests, Life Crystals, and other useful underground items. It’s also one of the ingredients needed to eventually craft the Cell Phone, one of the most useful information accessories in the game.
You’ll need it for the crafting chain that leads through items like the Goblin Tech, PDA, and finally the Cell Phone.
So if you’re trying to complete the Cell Phone, the Metal Detector is one of those items that can feel annoying because it depends on a rare enemy spawn rather than a normal crafting recipe.
Fast answer
To get the Metal Detector in Terraria, kill a Nymph in the Cavern layer. She appears disguised as a Lost Girl. Use a Lifeform Analyzer, Hunter Potion, Battle Potion, and Water Candle to find her faster.
