How To Put Earbuds On Headphones?
Choose the correct ear tips
To wear earbuds properly, choose tips that fit your ear canals if different sizes are available.
Use the correct size of ear tips.
Try different types and brands of earbuds to find one that fits your ears.
- Make sure you’re putting your earbuds in the correct ears.
- Most earbuds are not designed to be interchangeable between your left and right ears.
- To ensure the best fit and sound quality, match your earbuds to the correct ear.
- Most brands will have L and R printed somewhere on the earbuds so you can tell which is which.
Every ear is a different size and shape, and it's not unusual to find differences between each ear on the same person.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match the eartips and stability bands until you're completely happy with the feel and fit.
The correct fit isn't only about comfort. Choosing the right size eartip and stability band for each ear will ensure you experience the best sound quality.
The better the fit and seal, the more they will reduce external noise. Music will sound clearer, with greater depth and richness — and you won’t need to turn up the volume as high to get the best experience.

Insert the earbuds into your ears
- Insert the headset (earbud) units into both ears.
- Place the earbuds snugly into your ear canal.
- In order for earbuds to effectively transmit sound, they need to be lodged in your ear canal and relatively close to your eardrum.
- Giving the earbuds 2–3 twists back and forth may help to lodge them in place.
- Rotate the earbud into a comfortable position.
Twist the headset (earbud) to slide the earbud tip deep into your ear.
The earbud tip will be easier to slide deep into your ear if you pull up on the top of the ear lightly while twisting the headphones.
Gently pull on the top of each ear to open the ear canal, and lightly insert the earbuds.
Be sure to push the earbuds all the way into your ears to achieve a proper seal with both ear canals. They should be snug, but comfortable.
Fitting the head of the wireless earbuds in your ear canal will also block ambient sound from entering your ears.
If your earbuds aren’t comfortable or feel loose in your ears, it might help to rotate them a little.
Earbuds with stems typically work best if the stem part is oriented downward on a slight diagonal, parallel with your jawline.

Secure the earbuds in place
- Pull on your earlobes
- Secure the earbud in your right ear, lightly tug on that earlobe with your left hand. At the same time, use the index finger of your right hand to push the earbud into your ear canal.
- Position the earbuds
- Rotate the earbud into a comfortable position.
- Check the fit
- They should be snug, but comfortable.
With the right combination of tip sizes and stability bands, you’ll get the best fit from your new wireless earbuds.
While you find the best-fitting eartip for each ear, also try the different stability bands, which wrap around the external part of the earbud to help hold the earbuds correctly in place in the ridges of your outer ear.
The eartips and stability bands are made of soft silicone and designed for a secure fit, to help you comfortably and properly wear them all day long.
If the earbud tips tend to come off or you feel that there is insufficient low frequency sound and a difference in volume between the left and right units, change the earbud tips to another size to comfortably and snugly fit your left and right ears.
Some people recommend twisting the earbuds upward so the stem fits under the helix of your ear. While this might help keep the earbuds in place, keep in mind that it will reduce mic quality if your earbuds have built-in microphones.

Attach ear tips to the nozzle
- With the spring tips, apply most of the force on the ridge of the stem where it's thickest.
- Line one part of the stem up so it's slightly over the nozzle and then wrap the rest of the stem over.
- You do need to be assertive with it, but after a few goes you'll get used to it.
- Take care not to tear the “hood” though.
Getting ear tips on the nozzle can sometimes be cumbersome.
Best is to put the eartips on the nozzle with an angle of 30 degrees or so, and then “nutate” it on.
At some point you will get the hang of it.
In the past when I had trouble, I worked the material to make it a bit softer. A pen or something, but carefully. Then simply work it on at an angle. Slow and steady does the job.
I squeeze the tip so it is oval get it on one side and yeah just work it round.
I like to get an edge on a side and “roll” my finger around the edge of the nozzle to nudge it on there.
Turning inside out can often make it easier to attach difficult to attach tips in the first place as well.
It is possible to tear them. It’s not common.

Remove and change the ear tips
- Just grab and pull firmly.
- Try to pull on the actual stem bit.
- You can turn them inside out and pull from the bottom of the stem.
- Change the earbud tips to another size to comfortably and snugly fit your left and right ears.
If the earbuds do not fit your ears, change the earbud tips to another size.
Try each size of eartips. See how they feel in your ears.
Start by pushing the small earbud tips onto the left and right earbud nozzles, being careful to note which side is which.
The better the fit and seal, the more they will reduce external noise.
Earbud tips tend to come off when the fit is not snug.
It is possible to tear them, or with the spring tips specifically, as they are made of two different materials, they can split at that point.
Risks of deep IEMs! Tip broke off in ear canal, needed to be removed.
Keep the fit during use
- Don’t move your jaw while using earbuds if you can help it.
- Depending on the shape of your jaw and its proximity to your ear canal, opening and closing your jaw may loosen the earbuds.
- While you obviously can’t help moving your jaw when you’re on a phone call, try not to move your jaw too much while you’re using the earbuds for other purposes.
- If you’re chewing a piece of gum or eating a snack while you’re listening to music on earbuds, the jaw motion may loosen the buds and make them slip out of your ears.
Clean earwax out of your ears if your earbuds don’t fit properly.
Keep your ears clean for the best fit and sound quality.
Make sure they're clean and free of dust, dirt, or wax before and after you use them.
To maintain your perfect sound, it’s not all about finding the right fit. You also need to take good care of your earbuds.
When you're not using your earbuds, the best place to store them is inside the charging case.
Clean the earbuds if you notice a wax buildup.
Don’t use soap to clean wireless earbuds, and never rinse them under the faucet.
