How To Remove Water In Phone Camera?
If you see fog, droplets, or a blurry patch inside your phone camera, the safest goal is simple: dry the phone slowly without pushing moisture deeper inside. A lot of people panic and start shaking the phone, heating it, or opening camera apps repeatedly. Those are usually the things that make the problem worse.
Phone cameras are sealed better than they used to be, but they are not magic. Water can still get in through the SIM tray, speaker grille, charging port, cracked back glass, worn adhesive, or a tiny gap around the camera housing. Once moisture reaches the lens area, it often shows up as a cloudy circle, internal condensation, or photos that look soft even after you wipe the outside lens.
First, make sure the water is actually inside the camera

Before doing anything drastic, clean the outside camera glass properly.
Use a dry microfiber cloth and wipe the camera lens gently. If there is oily residue, fingerprints, sunscreen, or dust stuck to the lens, the blur can look a lot like trapped moisture. I’ve seen phones come back from the beach with “camera water damage” that was really just salt spray dried onto the lens cover.
Look closely under a bright light:
- If the glass surface looks smeared and changes when you wipe it, it is probably outside.
- If the foggy patch stays in the same place no matter how much you clean, it may be inside.
- If you see tiny droplets behind the lens glass, moisture has likely entered the camera area.
- If the blur disappears and comes back depending on temperature, that is usually condensation.
Condensation often appears after moving from a cold place to a warm, humid one, such as taking a phone from an air-conditioned room outside on a hot day. It can also happen after water exposure, especially if the phone was recently dropped, repaired, or has a cracked back panel.
Turn the phone off if it got wet

If the phone was splashed, dropped in water, used in heavy rain, or exposed to steam, turn it off right away. Don’t keep testing the camera every few minutes. Don’t charge it. Don’t plug in headphones or accessories.
Water by itself is bad enough, but electricity running through damp components is where real damage starts. Even if the phone still works, moisture can cause corrosion later. A camera that looks foggy today can become a permanently blurry camera, a failed Face ID/biometric sensor, or a dead mainboard if moisture keeps moving around inside.
Remove the case. Take out the SIM tray if your phone has one. Wipe the outside dry with a clean cloth. Keep the phone upright or slightly angled so water can drain away from openings rather than sitting against them.
Don’t use a hair dryer, oven, radiator, or direct sunlight

Heat feels like the obvious answer, but it is one of the easiest ways to damage a phone.
A hair dryer can push water deeper through the speaker grille or camera gap. High heat can soften adhesives, damage the battery, warp seals, or create more condensation inside the phone as moisture moves around. Leaving the phone in direct sun can also overheat the battery and display.
Warm air in a room is fine. Forced hot air is not.
The best approach is slow drying with airflow and a moisture-absorbing environment.
The best home method: silica gel and patience

If you have silica gel packets — the little “do not eat” packets from shoe boxes, camera gear, electronics packaging, or bags — use those. They are much better than rice.
Put the phone and several silica gel packets into an airtight container or zip bag. Do not wrap the phone tightly. You want dry air around it. Leave it there for at least 24 to 48 hours. If the fog is heavy or the phone was submerged, give it longer.
For camera condensation, I usually wouldn’t expect instant results. A very light haze may clear in a few hours. Visible droplets behind the camera glass can take a couple of days, and sometimes they don’t fully clear without opening the phone.
If you don’t have silica gel, a dry cabinet or a sealed box with a commercial moisture absorber can help. Some people use uncooked rice because it is convenient, but rice is not ideal. It is dusty, not very effective compared with silica gel, and tiny particles can get into ports. If rice is your only option, at least wrap the phone loosely in a clean paper towel before placing it nearby, not buried deep in the rice.
Keep the phone in the right position
Position matters more than most people think.
If the rear camera is foggy, place the phone with the camera side facing slightly upward, not pressed flat against a table. If the charging port or speaker area got wet, keep that side angled downward for a while so gravity can help moisture leave through openings.
Avoid shaking the phone. Shaking may spread water into parts that were still dry. Also avoid tapping around the camera bump. The camera modules have delicate stabilization parts, especially on newer phones with optical image stabilization.
Give condensation time to clear before judging the camera
After drying, turn the phone on and check the camera in good lighting. Don’t judge it in a dark room, because low-light camera processing can make haze and blur look worse.
Open the camera app and test:
- Main rear camera
- Ultra-wide camera
- Telephoto camera, if your phone has one
- Front camera
- Flash photos
- Video mode
Sometimes only one lens is affected. For example, the main lens may be foggy while the ultra-wide looks normal. That usually means moisture reached one camera module or the glass above it, not necessarily the entire phone.
If the haze clears but photos still look soft, the issue may be residue left behind after the water dried. This is common with pool water, seawater, dirty rainwater, or sugary drinks. Clean water can evaporate with little trace. Salt water and pool water are much more destructive.
What if the camera fog keeps coming back?
If the camera clears and then fogs again later, moisture is still trapped inside the phone or the seal has failed. This often happens after:
- A cracked camera lens cover
- A back glass repair
- Battery replacement
- Previous screen repair
- A bent phone frame
- Worn water-resistant adhesive
- Exposure to bathroom steam or sauna heat
Phones are not designed for steam. A hot shower can push moisture into places normal splashes would not reach. Even water-resistant phones can develop condensation from repeated steam exposure.
Recurring fog usually needs professional service. A technician may need to open the phone, dry the internals properly, clean corrosion, replace the camera lens cover, or reseal the back housing. Simply drying it at home may work for a while, but the problem can return when temperature changes.
If the phone fell in salt water, act faster
Salt water is one of the worst cases. It dries into conductive, corrosive residue. Even if the camera fog disappears, salt can keep damaging the phone internally.
If your phone went into the ocean, don’t rely on rice or silica gel alone. Turn it off, don’t charge it, and get it to a repair shop as soon as possible. The same applies to chlorinated pool water, muddy water, soda, coffee, or any liquid that is not clean fresh water.
A repair shop may clean the board and connectors with proper electronics-safe methods. The sooner this happens, the better the chance of saving the camera and the rest of the phone.
What not to do
There are a few common “fixes” that create more problems than they solve.
Don’t put the phone in the freezer. The moisture may freeze temporarily, but it will return as condensation when the phone warms up.
Don’t open the phone unless you already know what you’re doing. Modern phones use strong adhesive, fragile ribbon cables, and tiny camera connectors. It is easy to crack the back glass, damage the battery, or break waterproofing completely.
Don’t use compressed air directly into ports or around the camera. It can force liquid farther inside.
Don’t charge the phone until you are confident it is dry. Charging a wet phone is one of the quickest ways to turn a minor moisture problem into a serious repair.
Don’t assume water resistance means waterproof. IP ratings are tested under controlled conditions with clean water. Drops, repairs, age, pressure, soap, steam, and salt water all reduce real-world protection.
When you should go to a repair shop
Home drying is reasonable if the fog is light, the phone was only briefly exposed to moisture, and everything else works normally. But professional help is the better choice if:
- You can see droplets inside the camera
- The phone was submerged
- The camera stays foggy after 48 hours
- The phone gets hot, restarts, or behaves strangely
- Face ID, fingerprint, speaker, microphone, or charging starts failing
- The phone was exposed to salt water or sugary liquid
- There is a crack near the camera lens or back glass
- The camera clears but fog returns again
A technician can also tell whether the moisture is under the outer camera glass or inside the camera module itself. If water entered the actual camera module, drying may not restore perfect image quality. In that case, the module may need replacement.
How to prevent it happening again
Use a proper waterproof pouch near pools, beaches, boats, and heavy rain. A phone case helps against drops, but most cases do not seal ports or camera areas against water.
Avoid taking the phone into bathrooms during hot showers. Steam is sneaky and causes more camera fog than people expect.
If your phone has been repaired, treat its water resistance as reduced unless the shop specifically resealed and pressure-tested it. Even then, I would not trust it the same way as a new phone.
Check the camera glass regularly. A tiny crack around the lens may not affect photos immediately, but it gives moisture a path inside. Replacing a cracked lens cover early is usually cheaper than replacing a camera module later.
If your camera is foggy right now, the practical move is: power off, remove the case and SIM tray, dry the exterior, seal it with silica gel, wait at least a day or two, and avoid heat or charging. If the fog doesn’t clear or comes back, get it inspected before corrosion turns a camera problem into a whole-phone problem.
