There are two types of blue light glasses

- this is probably what you have.
- it is a anti-reflective coating that reflects light on the blue end of the spectrum.
- they are clear but reflections on the lens look bluish.
- they don't block all blue light, just a very, very small percentage of blue light (enough to call them "blue blockers" but not enough to make it look like you're wearing yellow shades).
- tons of patients and doctors swear by it and feel like it reduces eye strain when on the computer.
- but there is no evidence it actually does anything.
- at most, there was a prestigious study that suggested they might improve your circadian rhythm and help you sleep at night but that theory has since been debunked.
UV ar coating
- uv ar coating: this is a type of lens coating that blocks ultraviolet (uv) light rays.
- because uv is adjacent to blue light on the electromagnetic spectrum many people don't distinguish between the two or flat out confuse them with one another.
- this means less skilled and knowledgeable optical staff will call uv blocking coating "blue blocking", or will believe blue light causes damage the same way uv does.
- uv actually is a well known carcinogen and is believed to contribute to skin and lens damage over time.
- it essentially ages you.
- in theory you can test a uv coating using a uv pen, but since uv is invisible to the nacked eye you won't be able to tell if it's working unless you use a special device or filter to detect the uv light.
- i would recommend uv coating, but i wouldn't claim that it will make a noticeable difference in your vision or help you do computer work (computers shouldn't be outputting any significant uv anyway).
- furthermore, your eyes have a natural way of blocking most uv rays so i wouldn't claim that you're ruining your eyes by not wearing uv blocker.
- at any rate, most quality ar coatings and contact lenses include uv blocking anyway and polycarbonate lenses (which are the ones advertised to be thinner, lighter, and impact resistant) naturally block uv even without a coating so odds are you have uv protection in some way or another even if you don't realize it.
Blue light test and UV tester device
- the thing is, today i went to a glasses store looking for a new frame, and they did the typical blue light test (with the laser pen) and surprisingly, my glasses didn't pass it.
- later i went into another store and again, my glasses didn't pass, but right after that, they took an uv tester device (can't find it online, but it looked more professional than the pen) and my glasses passed the test perfectly, the seller quickly got embarrassed and took away the glasses.
- so now, i don't know if they were trying to trick me with the pen scam, or if my glasses aren't blocking blue light properly.
- to add on top of this, it is likely that the wavelength of the first light they were using was outside the range of your current coating.
- if your coating only blocks up to 420nm and the light is 460nm, then it will shine through.
- the second light would probably have been 380-400, and been blocked
UV is not blue light
- just adding to what has been said already, uv is not blue light.
- nearly every ar coating blocks uv.
- only a few coasting block “harmful” blue light.
- the fact that this optician didn’t know that means that he doesn’t know what he’s selling.

- if you want to block blue light because you’re concerned about digital eye strain, then you’re probably better off to save your money and give your eyes frequent breaks from screen time.
