How To Turn Up Headset Mic Volume?
First, make sure the mic is the problem — not the app

Before changing every setting you can find, do one quick test: record your voice somewhere simple.
On Windows, open Voice Recorder or Sound Recorder and make a short clip. On Mac, use Voice Memos or QuickTime audio recording. On a phone, use the built-in voice recorder app.
Speak at the same distance you normally use during calls or gaming. If the recording is quiet there too, the headset mic level is probably too low at the system level. If the recording sounds fine but Discord, Zoom, Teams, Xbox party chat, or your game chat is quiet, the issue is probably inside that app.
This saves a lot of frustration, because many people turn up the wrong setting. I’ve seen plenty of headsets blamed for “bad mic volume” when Discord had input volume at 40%, or Zoom was auto-adjusting the mic down every time the person laughed or spoke loudly.
Turn up headset mic volume on Windows

Windows has a few different mic controls, and the names vary slightly depending on your version and audio driver.
Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and open Sound settings. Under Input, choose your headset microphone. If your headset has both a “Headset” mic and another device like “Microphone Array,” make sure the headset is selected. Laptops often default back to the built-in mic without making it obvious.
Click your headset mic, then look for Input volume. Raise it near the top — usually somewhere around 80 to 100 is reasonable. Use the input test bar while speaking normally. You want the bar to move strongly when you talk, but not slam to the end constantly.
For more detailed controls, open:
Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings
Then go to the Recording tab, right-click your headset microphone, and choose Properties.
Under the Levels tab, you may see:
- Microphone
- Microphone Boost
Start by raising the regular microphone level first. If it is still too quiet, add microphone boost gradually. A small boost can help a lot, but pushing it too far often makes your mic sound harsh, hissy, or distorted. If you see options like +10 dB, +20 dB, or +30 dB, try +10 dB first. Jumping straight to +30 dB usually fixes volume and creates three new problems.
If people say your mic is loud but sounds terrible, back off the boost and move the mic closer to your mouth instead.
Check Windows privacy permissions

If your headset mic barely works or doesn’t work in some apps, check microphone permissions.
Go to:
Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
Make sure microphone access is enabled, and confirm the app you’re using has permission. This is more common after Windows updates, new headset installs, or switching from a USB headset to a wireless one.
Permissions usually cause “no mic” rather than “quiet mic,” but it’s still worth checking if the app behaves strangely.
Adjust mic volume in Discord

Discord has its own input controls, and they can override what you think you fixed in Windows.
Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
Under Input Device, choose your headset mic manually. Don’t leave it on Default if you regularly switch between speakers, monitors, webcams, controllers, or Bluetooth devices.
Raise Input Volume. Then use Discord’s mic test. If your voice is still cutting in and out, look at Input Sensitivity.
Automatic input sensitivity can be convenient, but it sometimes causes quiet voices to disappear, especially with headset mics that sit farther from the mouth. Turn off automatic sensitivity and set the slider manually. Speak normally and place the threshold just below your speaking level. If it’s too high, Discord will only catch the louder parts of your speech.
Also check Discord’s processing options. Noise suppression, echo cancellation, and automatic gain control can help in noisy rooms, but they can also make some headset mics sound thinner or quieter. If your mic volume changes randomly while talking, try toggling Automatic Gain Control off and test again.
Adjust mic volume in Zoom, Teams, Skype, and other call apps
Video call apps often “help” by automatically adjusting your microphone volume. Sometimes that help is useful. Sometimes it slowly turns you down until everyone says, “Can you speak up?”
In Zoom, open Settings > Audio. Choose your headset mic under Microphone. Raise the input level if manual control is available. If Zoom keeps changing your volume, uncheck the option that automatically adjusts microphone volume.
In Microsoft Teams, go to Settings > Devices and select your headset microphone. Teams can be stubborn with default devices, especially if you plug in a headset after the app is already open. Fully quitting and reopening Teams can fix cases where it refuses to use the right mic.
For browser-based calls, check the browser’s microphone permission and selected input device. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can all use a different microphone than your system default.
Turn up headset mic volume on Mac
On a Mac, open System Settings, then go to Sound and select Input.
Choose your headset microphone from the list. Raise the Input volume slider while speaking normally. Watch the input level meter. If it barely moves, increase the slider. If it constantly peaks, lower it slightly.
Macs tend to be simpler than Windows here, but the device selection matters. If you use AirPods, a USB headset, a webcam mic, or an audio interface, macOS may switch inputs depending on what connected last.
Some communication apps on Mac also have their own mic input controls, so check the app after setting the system input.
Turn up mic volume on iPhone or Android
Phones do not usually give you a normal “microphone volume” slider for headset mics. If your headset mic is quiet on a phone, the fix is usually physical, app-related, or compatibility-related.
Check that the mic hole is not blocked by clothing, a case, dust, or your hand. Inline headset microphones are easy to accidentally cover. If the mic hangs around chest level, it may sound distant unless you clip it higher or hold it closer.
For Bluetooth headsets, disconnect and reconnect the headset. If that doesn’t help, forget the device and pair it again. Some apps also have their own call audio settings, especially voice chat and meeting apps.
If you’re using a wired headset with an adapter, the adapter matters. Cheap USB-C or Lightning adapters can cause low input volume, crackling, or no mic detection at all. A proper adapter that supports microphone input is needed, not just headphone output.
Check the mic position before blaming the settings
Mic position makes a bigger difference than most software sliders.
For boom mics, place the microphone about one finger-width away from the corner of your mouth, not directly in front of your lips. If it sits in front of your mouth, you’ll get breath blasts and popping sounds. If it sits near your cheek or too far away, your voice may be quiet and thin.
For inline mics on earbuds, keep the mic near your upper chest or collar area. If it hangs low near your stomach, it will pick up room noise and your voice will sound distant.
For wireless gaming headsets, make sure the boom is fully lowered or extended. Some models mute or reduce pickup when the boom is flipped up, partially raised, or not clicked into position properly.
Also check for physical mute switches. Many headsets have a mute button on the cable, earcup, USB dongle, or boom arm. Some are easy to bump without noticing.
If your headset uses USB software, check that too
Gaming headsets from brands like Logitech, Razer, HyperX, SteelSeries, Corsair, Turtle Beach, and Astro often have companion software. These apps may include microphone gain, sidetone, noise gate, compressor, or broadcast-style effects.
Open the headset software and look for mic gain or input level. If there is a noise gate, be careful with it. A gate set too aggressively can make your mic seem quiet because it cuts off softer words. This is common when someone says, “My friends hear the start of my sentence, then it drops out.”
If there is a firmware update available, install it. Headset firmware updates sometimes fix mic sensitivity, USB dongle behavior, or wireless audio bugs.
Bluetooth headset mics can be limited
Bluetooth microphones are convenient, but they have trade-offs. Many Bluetooth headsets switch into a lower-quality call mode when the microphone is active. On computers, this can make the mic sound muffled, quiet, or inconsistent compared with a wired USB headset.
If your Bluetooth headset has two device options in Windows, such as “Headphones” and “Headset,” the microphone usually works only in headset mode. The audio quality may drop while the mic is active. That’s a Bluetooth limitation, not necessarily a broken headset.
For work calls, gaming, or streaming, a wired USB headset or a dedicated USB microphone is usually more reliable.
If the mic is loud enough but sounds bad
Turning up volume is not always the best fix. If your mic is too far away, boosting it also boosts keyboard noise, fan noise, room echo, and electrical hiss. If your gain is too high, your voice may distort whenever you speak loudly.
Aim for a clean signal first:
- Move the mic closer
- Lower microphone boost if the sound is harsh
- Turn off overly aggressive noise suppression
- Avoid placing the mic directly in your breathing path
- Test in the actual app you use most
Ask someone to describe the problem clearly. “Too quiet,” “muffled,” “cutting out,” “robotic,” and “distorted” all point to different fixes.
If nothing works
Try the headset on another device. If it is quiet on every computer or phone, the headset mic may be weak, damaged, dirty, or poorly designed. Some budget headsets simply have low mic sensitivity, and no setting makes them sound like a good standalone microphone.
Try another headset on the same computer too. If every mic is quiet, the issue is probably your system settings, sound driver, USB port, audio jack, or app configuration.
For 3.5 mm headsets, make sure the plug matches your device. A headset with a combined audio/mic plug needs a combo jack, or a splitter if your PC has separate headphone and microphone ports. Plugging it into the wrong port often causes very low volume or no mic input.
For USB headsets, try a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through a cheap hub. Front-panel PC audio ports and low-quality adapters are frequent sources of weak or noisy mic input.
Most quiet headset mic problems come down to one of four things: the wrong input device is selected, the app volume is low, automatic adjustment is fighting you, or the mic is physically too far from your mouth. Fix those first, then use boost only as much as needed.
