Most cameras are designed around removable storage, so using one without an SD card depends heavily on what you’re trying to do. If you want to take normal photos and save them in the camera, the honest answer is usually: you need a card. But if your goal is to preview images, use the camera as a webcam, shoot tethered to a computer, record externally, or transfer directly to a phone, there are several workable options.
The trick is knowing which “without SD card” situation you’re in. A camera that can turn on without a card is not the same as a camera that can actually save photos without one.
First, check whether the camera has internal memory

Some compact cameras and older point-and-shoot models have a small amount of built-in storage. It’s usually tiny — enough for a handful of photos, not a full day of shooting.
You can check by turning the camera on without a card and taking a photo. If it lets you shoot and then review the image, it likely has internal memory. If you see messages like:
- “No memory card”
- “Insert card”
- “Cannot record”
- “Card required”
- “Release locked”
then the camera either has no internal storage or refuses to save without a card.
On many modern mirrorless and DSLR cameras, there is no useful internal memory. The camera may let you view menus, change settings, and even press the shutter, but it won’t store the image unless a card is inserted.
One setting worth checking is usually called something like Release shutter without card. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and other brands often include this option. It allows the shutter to fire even when no card is installed. This is useful in a shop demo or for testing a lens, but it can be dangerous because you may think you are taking photos when nothing is being saved.
If you’re practicing exposure, checking autofocus, or testing a used camera before buying it, that setting is fine. If you’re shooting anything you care about, turn it off so the camera warns you when there’s no card.
Using the camera while connected to a computer

If you want to take photos without saving them to an SD card, tethered shooting is often the cleanest solution.
Tethering means the camera is connected to a laptop or desktop by USB cable, and the images are saved directly to the computer. This is common in studio photography, product photography, portraits, scanning artwork, and controlled indoor shoots.
Depending on the camera brand, you may use software such as:
- Canon EOS Utility
- Nikon NX Tether or Camera Control Pro
- Sony Imaging Edge Desktop
- Fujifilm X Acquire or Capture One support
- OM Workspace for OM System/Olympus
- Panasonic Lumix Tether
Some editing programs also support tethered capture, including Lightroom Classic and Capture One, though camera compatibility varies.
In practice, tethering works best when the camera is on a tripod and you’re not moving around much. A short, loose cable is a recipe for frustration. Use a decent USB cable, avoid pulling on the port, and if possible, use a cable clamp or tethering cable with a right-angle connector. Camera USB ports are not built to be yanked repeatedly.
Once connected, open the tethering software, select the camera, and choose where images should be saved. Some cameras let you save to the computer only. Others let you save to both the card and the computer. If you truly have no card inserted, make sure the software is set to save directly to the computer.
The downside is speed and reliability. Large RAW files over USB can be slower than writing to a good card, and if the cable disconnects mid-session, the shot may fail. For studio work, tethering is excellent. For travel, events, wildlife, sports, or anything handheld, it is awkward.
Using the camera as a webcam without a card

If your goal is video calls, streaming, online classes, or recording yourself at a desk, you often don’t need an SD card at all.
Many cameras now support webcam mode through USB. Some need brand software installed, while newer models may appear as a standard webcam automatically. Once connected, you select the camera inside Zoom, Teams, OBS, Google Meet, or whatever software you’re using.
In webcam mode, the computer receives the video feed directly. Nothing has to be recorded inside the camera, so the lack of an SD card usually doesn’t matter.
A few practical things matter more than the card:
- Use a dummy battery or USB power if the camera supports it.
- Turn off auto power-off or sleep mode.
- Disable on-screen display if it appears in the video feed.
- Use continuous autofocus carefully; some cameras hunt in low light.
- Watch overheating if you’re using a mirrorless camera for long sessions.
For better quality, many people use HDMI output into a capture card instead of USB webcam mode. This also does not require an SD card if you’re only streaming or recording on the computer. You’ll need a camera with clean HDMI output, a capture card, and an HDMI cable that fits the camera’s port.
Clean HDMI means the camera sends only the image, not focus boxes, battery icons, or menu overlays. Some older cameras don’t offer this, which makes them annoying for streaming.
Recording video externally

If you want to record high-quality video without using an SD card in the camera, an external recorder can do it — but only with the right equipment.
Devices like Atomos Ninja or Blackmagic Video Assist record the camera’s HDMI output to their own storage, usually SSDs or specific media. Filmmakers use this setup to get better codecs, longer recording times, larger screens, and sometimes higher bit depth than the camera records internally.
This is not the cheapest workaround for a missing SD card. It only makes sense if you already need an external monitor/recorder or your camera has video limitations you’re trying to bypass.
You also need to check whether your camera can output a clean video signal while not recording internally. Some cameras can. Some show overlays. Some limit resolution or frame rate through HDMI. Some older models shut off after a certain time even when outputting HDMI.
For casual video, buying a proper SD card is usually much simpler. External recording is powerful, but it adds batteries, cables, mounts, storage drives, and more points of failure.
Transferring to a phone is not the same as shooting without a card
A lot of cameras have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth apps that transfer photos to a phone. This can make it feel like you don’t need a card, but most cameras still save the image to the SD card first, then transfer a copy to the phone.
Canon Camera Connect, Nikon SnapBridge, Sony Creators’ App / Imaging Edge Mobile, Fujifilm Camera Remote, Panasonic Image App, and similar apps are mainly for transfer and remote control. They usually do not turn your phone into live storage for full-resolution shooting.
There are exceptions and special modes, but for normal use, don’t assume the phone replaces the SD card. If the camera says no card, the app probably won’t magically solve it.
Remote shooting from a phone is still useful without a card if you only need live view, framing, or camera control. For example, you might use the phone to check composition while the camera is mounted overhead or placed across the room. But if you press the shutter and the camera has nowhere to save the image, you’re stuck.
Can you use a camera with USB storage instead of an SD card?
Usually, no.
Most cameras do not let you plug in a USB flash drive and record directly to it. The USB port is normally for data transfer, charging, tethering, firmware updates, or webcam use — not for using a thumb drive as camera storage.
There are exceptions in some cinema cameras, action cameras, and newer hybrid video bodies that support recording to external USB-C SSDs. Panasonic, Blackmagic, Sigma, and a few other video-focused systems have models that can do this. But for a typical DSLR, mirrorless camera, or compact camera, USB flash drive recording is not supported.
Even when USB-C SSD recording is available, the drive usually has to meet speed and formatting requirements. A random cheap flash drive may not work, especially for high-bitrate video.
If you only want to test the camera
You can often test a camera without an SD card, but don’t confuse testing with real shooting.
You can usually check:
- Whether the camera powers on
- Whether the lens focuses
- Whether the shutter fires
- Whether the screen and viewfinder work
- Whether menus respond
- Whether buttons and dials function
- Whether autofocus detects subjects

What you can’t reliably check without a card is whether the camera writes files correctly. A damaged card slot, write error, or corrupt file issue may not show up until you insert a card and take actual photos.
If you’re buying a used camera, bring a known-good SD card. Format it in the camera, take several photos, record a short video, review the files, then check them on a computer if possible. A camera that “clicks fine” without a card can still have a storage-related problem.
Why the camera may refuse to shoot without a card
Many cameras intentionally block shooting without storage because it prevents accidents. This is especially common on cameras aimed at serious photographers.
If you’re seeing a warning and just want to practice, look in the menu for settings like:

- Release shutter w/o card
- Shoot without card
Enable it only if you understand that the images will not be saved. I’ve seen people test lighting setups or pose clients with no card installed, then realize later that every “photo” was just a shutter click. It’s one of those mistakes that feels impossible until it happens once.
For paid work or anything important, leave the warning enabled. It’s better to be interrupted by an error message than to shoot an empty session.
The simplest fix is still buying the right card
If your actual goal is photography, an SD card is not an optional accessory. It’s part of the camera system.
Buy from a reputable brand and avoid suspiciously cheap cards online. Counterfeit memory cards are common, especially large-capacity cards sold at unrealistic prices. SanDisk, Lexar, Sony, ProGrade, Kingston, Samsung, and Angelbird all make good cards, but even good brands can be faked by bad sellers.
For basic photos, a standard SDHC or SDXC card is usually fine. For 4K video, burst shooting, or high-resolution RAW files, pay attention to write speed, not just capacity. A card that says “170 MB/s” on the front may advertise read speed while the write speed is much lower.
For many everyday cameras, a 64GB or 128GB SDXC card from a reliable seller is the practical sweet spot. Keep a spare in your bag. It weighs almost nothing and saves you from exactly this problem.
What actually works without an SD card
If you need to use a camera right now and don’t have a card, your realistic options are:
- Use webcam mode and record/stream on a computer.
- Shoot tethered to a computer if your camera supports it.
- Use HDMI output into a capture card for live video.
- Record externally with a proper HDMI recorder.
- Use limited internal memory if the camera has it.
- Practice settings and autofocus without saving images.
For normal photo or video capture inside the camera, you’ll almost always need a memory card. Some workarounds are excellent in the right setting, especially tethering and webcam use, but none are as simple or flexible as having a reliable SD card in the slot.
