focal length and reach
- when photographing wildlife, whether capturing birds in flight or photographing bears in alaska, one of the most important factors in choosing a lens is its focal length.
- generally, the longer the lens (in focal length), the better.
- a telephoto zoom lens lets you get close to wildlife without disturbing it.
- this is especially useful for animals that are timid or even dangerous.
- you want as much telephoto reach as you can get – ideally more than 300mm.
- an effective telephoto length for good wildlife work starts at 400mm (8x magnification) and runs up to 600mm (12x.)
- in my experience, focal lengths longer than 600mm tend to be too heavy, long and bulky to be effective for general use, but less than 400mm hasn't the reach you need.

- a 600mm compresses the scene—it isolates.

zoom flexibility
- zooming back from 400mm to 100mm — and every setting in between — gives you maximum versatility.
- this is particularly useful for precise framing.
- instead of stepping back or forward several yards to crop out a distracting branch or wire, you just zoom, quickly and quietly.
- this is really nice when a subject moves close.
- just back off that zoom and you keep it in the frame.
- or zoom up to frame a tight face shot.

- a cheetah climbs a termite mound, then bolts after prey.
- you can’t always follow that with a prime.
- with the 100-500, i can adapt.
- another huge plus? framing flexibility.
- a wider focal length allows me to include more of the environment when i want to tell a bigger story.
- i love zooming out a bit to show animals in their context—the dust, the sky, the vegetation.
- that’s something a fixed 600mm can’t offer.

low light and aperture
- f/8 is fine for shooting birds in bright sunlight, it will be a whole different ballgame if you are shooting in lower light.
- f/8 just doesn't cut it as soon as the light starts to fade.
- its a great lens for walking around in bright sunlight but it will struggle in good light situations and for a lot of wildlife photography, low light is where all the magic is.
- yeah exactly, you need a lot of light when stopped down to those levels.
- when i am shooting something like a small songbird at sunset i need to be at like 1/2000th or faster.
- even at f/4 my iso is often starting to creep pretty high.
- at 5.6 i start to compromise on shutter speed to keep the iso out of ridiculous levels.
- at 7.1 things get really problematic.
- at 8 the iso is so high that the photo is a grainy mess.
- modern cameras have really improved with iso performance but trying to retain detail in feathers at like iso 10,000 just isn't a thing yet.
variable aperture works well
- now, if you’re wondering why this zoom and many like it are labeled with maximum apertures of both f/4.5 and f/5.6, well that’s a product of their zoom.
- the farther a lens gets from its film plane or focus point, the more light it loses on the way.
- extend an f/4.5 100mm zoom toward 200, 300 and 400mm and at some point it loses enough light that the effective aperture becomes f/5.6.
- this is known as a variable aperture zoom.
- with auto-exposure cameras, as most are these days, this won’t even slow you down.
- just zoom and shoot and the camera will change the shutter speed to compensate.
- if you’re concerned that f/5.6 isn’t fast enough for adequate shutter speeds in low light situations, crank up your iso speed.
lightweight wildlife lens considerations
- wildlife and nature photography has always been something of a national past time.
- but one thing which can dent our enjoyment is the discomfort associated with carrying heavy camera bodies and invariably heavy lenses.
- what do i look for in a good quality wildlife lens? focal length is of course important (as is sharpness, contrast, focus speed and accuracy).
- in general a lens becomes useful for nature and wildlife if it can achieve at least 300mm of reach (in fx full frame terms).
- there is a caveat which comes into play when sensor size increases - if you're fairly close to an animal or bird a wide aperture can make life difficult - the depth of field is so shallow.
- note that most of the lenses i've mentioned so far are variable aperture lenses, starting at either f3.5 or f4, quickly closing down to f5.6 or f6.3 as you zoom.
- this helps to keep the lens small, light, and fairly affordable.
- if you need that wide aperture for low light work then the olympus 40-150 f2.8 pro is a hard act to beat, particularly when paired with its dedicated x1.4 teleconverter.

- 70-200mm f/2.8: close encounters, storytelling frames, wildlife in landscape, low light
- 100-300mm f/2.8 (with 1.4x tc): fast-paced work, forest animals, handheld flexibility
