Use an ND filter when the scene is too bright for the look you want

An ND filter is basically sunglasses for your camera. It cuts the amount of light entering the lens without changing the color of the scene — at least a good one does. For video, the main reason to use one is simple: bright light often forces your camera into settings that make footage look harsh, choppy, or too “video-ish.”
The most common situation is shooting outdoors in daylight while trying to keep natural motion blur. If you set your shutter speed correctly for video, use a low ISO, and still have too much light, an ND filter is the cleanest fix.
A typical example: you’re filming at 24 fps, so you set your shutter around 1/50. You want to shoot at f/2.8 for a soft background. It’s a sunny afternoon. Even at ISO 100, the image is blown out. Without an ND filter, you’d have to close the aperture to f/11 or f/16, raise the shutter speed to something ugly like 1/1000, or reduce exposure some other way. The ND lets you keep the shutter and aperture you actually want.
That is the core answer: use an ND filter when there’s too much light for your preferred shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.
The biggest video reason: keeping natural motion blur

Video usually looks best when the shutter speed is roughly double the frame rate. This is often called the 180-degree shutter rule.
For common frame rates, that means roughly:
- 24 fps → 1/48 or 1/50 shutter
- 25 fps → 1/50 shutter
- 30 fps → 1/60 shutter
- 50 fps → 1/100 shutter
- 60 fps → 1/120 shutter
You don’t need to treat these numbers like sacred law, but they’re a very good starting point. They create motion blur that feels natural to most viewers.
Without ND in daylight, many cameras will push the shutter speed much higher to avoid overexposure. The footage may look sharp in individual frames, but motion becomes jittery and brittle. Walking shots, cars passing, waving hands, water, and handheld camera movement all start to feel nervous.
This is one of the first things beginners notice after comparing their footage to more cinematic-looking work. The camera may be sharp, the lens may be good, but the motion looks off. Often the missing piece is simply ND.
Use ND when you want a wide aperture in bright conditions

Another common reason is depth of field.
If you’re filming a person outside and want the background to fall softly out of focus, you might want to shoot at f/1.8, f/2.8, or f/4. In full sun, those apertures let in a lot of light. If your shutter is locked near the right video value and your ISO is already at its base setting, you need ND.
Without it, you’ll be forced to stop down to f/8, f/11, or f/16. That may expose correctly, but the look changes. Backgrounds become sharper, distractions stand out, and the image can feel flatter. On smaller sensors, the difference is even more noticeable because you already have more depth of field to begin with.
This matters a lot for interviews, wedding films, travel videos, car shoots, music videos, and any scene where the subject needs separation from the background.
Use ND outdoors even on cloudy days sometimes

People often assume ND filters are only for blazing sun. Not always.
A bright overcast day can still be much brighter than indoor lighting. If you’re shooting at 24 fps, 1/50 shutter, ISO 100, and f/2.8, a cloudy sky may still overexpose your image. Snow, beach sand, pale concrete, water, and glass buildings make this worse because they reflect so much light.
I’ve seen plenty of footage shot on “not that sunny” days where the camera still needed several stops of ND. The sky tricks people. Your eyes adapt; the camera doesn’t have nearly the same flexibility once you’ve chosen your video settings.
Use ND for drones, action cameras, and phones — but with realistic expectations
Small cameras benefit from ND too, especially drones and action cameras. Most of them have fixed apertures, so they can only control exposure with ISO and shutter speed. In daylight, that means the shutter often shoots way too high unless you add ND.
On drones, ND filters are almost standard kit if you care about smooth-looking motion. Flying sideways past trees, buildings, or coastlines can look harsh without motion blur. ND helps keep shutter speed in the right range.
There is a catch: drones move through changing light quickly. You might launch in shade, fly into full sun, then turn toward the horizon. A fixed ND that was perfect one minute may be too dark the next. For casual flying, you may decide a slightly higher shutter is less annoying than constantly landing to swap filters. For planned shots, ND is worth the trouble.
Phones are trickier. Some apps let you lock shutter and ISO manually, which makes ND useful. If you’re using the default camera app in full auto, the phone may fight your filter by changing other settings. Clip-on phone NDs can help, but they’re more fiddly than proper lens filters and can cause softness or reflections if poorly aligned.
Fixed ND or variable ND?
For video, a variable ND is convenient because you can twist it to adjust strength as the light changes. This is why many solo shooters use one. If you’re filming weddings, travel, run-and-gun documentary work, or outdoor YouTube videos, a good variable ND saves time.
The downside is that cheap variable NDs can cause problems:
- color shifts
- uneven dark patches
- strange X-shaped patterns at strong settings
- loss of sharpness
- flare or ghosting
- polarization effects on skies, cars, windows, and water
A fixed ND usually gives cleaner image quality. If you’re doing controlled work, such as interviews, commercial shots, or narrative scenes, fixed ND filters are often better. You choose the strength you need and avoid the weirdness that can happen with variable filters.
For practical use, many shooters carry a variable ND for speed and a few fixed filters for more careful work. If you’re buying your first one, don’t buy the cheapest variable ND you can find. It’s one of those accessories where a bad filter can make an expensive lens look worse.
How strong should the ND filter be?
ND filters come in strengths measured in stops. Each stop cuts the light in half.
For outdoor video, these are common ranges:
- 2–3 stops: mild daylight, open shade, cloudy conditions
- 4–6 stops: bright daylight, wider apertures
- 6–10 stops: strong sun, very wide apertures, beach/snow scenes
If you shoot mostly outside with mirrorless cameras or DSLRs, a variable ND in the 2–5 stop range is useful for everyday work. In very bright conditions, a 6–9 stop variable ND may be needed. Some people carry both because variable NDs tend to perform best when they aren’t pushed to their extremes.
A common beginner mistake is buying an ND that is too weak. A 2-stop filter might help in shade, but it won’t do much at noon with a fast lens. Another mistake is using an extremely strong ND indoors or near sunset and then raising ISO to compensate. At that point, the filter is just making your camera work harder.
Use ND after you choose your creative settings, not before
A good order for setting exposure in video is:
- Choose your frame rate.
- Set shutter speed close to double that frame rate.
- Choose the aperture for the depth of field you want.
- Set ISO as low as practical, usually base ISO.
- Add ND until exposure looks right.
This keeps the filter in its proper role. It is there to control light after the creative choices are made.
If you start by spinning a variable ND randomly and then let the camera adjust shutter or ISO automatically, you can end up with inconsistent footage. The exposure may look fine, but the motion blur or noise level may change from shot to shot.
For paid or serious work, lock your camera settings manually whenever possible. Auto exposure can be useful for casual shooting, but it often makes outdoor video feel inconsistent, especially if someone walks across a bright background or the camera pans past the sky.
Times you probably don’t need an ND filter
You usually don’t need ND indoors unless you’re using very bright lights or trying to shoot wide open under strong studio fixtures. Most indoor scenes already need more light, not less.
You may also skip ND if you deliberately want a high shutter speed. Sports, action analysis, certain fight scenes, or a tense staccato look can benefit from sharper, more aggressive motion. Some scenes in war or action films use this effect on purpose. It’s not “wrong”; it’s just a specific look.
For casual family videos or quick clips, you may not care enough to add a filter. There’s nothing wrong with that. ND matters most when you’re trying to control the image rather than letting the camera make every decision.
Watch for color cast and IR pollution
Not all ND filters are truly neutral. Cheap filters may make the image green, brown, magenta, or slightly muddy. You can sometimes correct this in editing, but it’s annoying if different shots have different color shifts.
Heavy ND can also introduce infrared contamination on some cameras, especially with very strong filters. Blacks may turn reddish or brown. This shows up in dark clothing and shadows. IRND filters are designed to reduce that problem and are worth considering for higher-end video work.
If you buy a new ND filter, test it before using it on a job. Film a neutral wall, skin tones, dark clothing, sky, and foliage. Try different strengths if it’s a variable ND. Look at the footage on a proper screen, not just the camera display. A filter that seems fine on location can reveal a nasty color shift later.
Be careful with variable ND and wide lenses
Variable ND filters use polarization, and that can create uneven skies with wide-angle lenses. One side of the sky may turn deep blue while another stays pale. Reflections on cars, windows, and water may also change as you rotate the filter.
This isn’t always bad. Sometimes reducing glare looks great. But it can become distracting, especially during pans. If the sky changes unevenly across the frame, viewers may not know why the shot feels strange, but they’ll feel it.
With wide lenses, avoid pushing a variable ND to its maximum setting. If you see dark corners, blotchy skies, or an X-pattern, back off and use a stronger fixed ND instead.
The practical rule
Use an ND filter for video when you’re in bright light and want to keep your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO where they should be.
Most often, that means:
- daylight shooting at 24, 25, or 30 fps
- filming people outdoors with background blur
- drone or action camera footage where shutter gets too high
- beach, snow, water, and city scenes with lots of reflected light
- any situation where the image is overexposed after you’ve chosen your proper video settings
If your footage is too bright and your only remaining option is raising shutter speed or closing the aperture more than you want, it’s time for ND. A decent filter won’t make a bad shot good, but it lets the camera hold onto the look you intended instead of forcing compromises the viewer can feel.
