Either way, the parent unit runs on a battery, but you can also use it directly with the power adapter. We've been using it for a few weeks, and thanks to the economy mode, it uses very little electricity.

The camera does not have an on/off switch. If you want to switch them off completely, you have to disconnect them from the power supply (e.g. when not in use) but you can also leave them plugged in.
