Since this is handheld (on the phone) in order to stabilize the view it is set to focus with the camera resting on the surface of what you are viewing. Depending on the depth of what you are viewing, the focal point may be a bit further out which can be achieved by tilting the phone or putting a ring of paper or thin card stock around the item as long as it doesn’t obscure the light.
It can be used while plugged in but it has a very healthy battery life.
It gives definition that equals a hand held 30X magnifying glass (in my experience), the benefit being you can take a picture or video of what you are seeing. From there you can expand the image on your phone but you will not get more detail.
