Why does the black cross appear?

A
All variable ND filters have this issue: the longer the focal length used, the less the cross-shadow effect is felt. At very short focal lengths, cross-shadows and vignetting are clearly visible. As you increase the focal length, the shadows disappear naturally. This is a physical phenomenon, not a product defect.
